Job Overview:
The Rebar Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates for rebar materials and labor costs for construction projects. This role involves reviewing project specifications, blueprints, and design documents, and working closely with clients, engineers, and project managers to provide precise estimates. The primary purpose of this role is to return accurate estimates on time to prospective clients. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of rebar installation, construction processes, and the ability to assess project needs and develop cost-effective solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Review & Analysis:
Review and analyze project specifications, blueprints, and design documents to understand the scope of work and rebar requirements.
Identify and assess the rebar needs for projects, including material quantities, labor, and equipment required for rebar installation.
Collaborate with architects, engineers, and project managers to clarify project requirements and ensure accuracy in estimations.
Manage Outside Contractors & Resources
Continuously monitor the estimating workload and backlog.
Engage outside estimating firms as necessary to enable accurate and on time submission of estimates.
Review all estimates from outside firms for accuracy and adherence to industry standards and Upstate requirements. Address all errors and shortfalls immediately and follow through to resolution.
Manage outside resource allocation to stay within the Outside Estimating budget as published by management.
Cost Estimation:
Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates based on project plans and specifications.
Obtain pricing from suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring that estimates reflect current market conditions.
Estimate the cost of rebar fabrication, bending, cutting, and delivery as part of the total project cost.
Develop and maintain cost databases and benchmark pricing for future estimates.
Bid Preparation & Submittals:
Prepare and submit competitive bids for rebar work, ensuring that estimates are clear, accurate, and aligned with client expectations.
Coordinate with the sales and project management teams to submit timely and complete bid packages to potential clients.
Assist in the preparation of value engineering proposals, offering cost-effective alternatives without compromising quality.
Project Support & Communication:
Communicate regularly with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure accurate and up-to-date information is provided.
Assist in addressing any discrepancies or issues related to rebar estimates during project execution.
Follow up communication after bid submission to learn of new opportunities and any areas for improvement from the client’s perspective.
Documentation & Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of all estimates, bids, and associated documentation for reference and auditing purposes.
Track project changes, revisions, and updates, adjusting estimates as needed to reflect modifications in scope or design.
Prepare detailed reports for management, including cost breakdowns, material take-offs, and project progress updates.
Qualifications:
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field (preferred).
Proven experience (5+ years) in estimating rebar or reinforced concrete projects.
Strong knowledge of rebar materials, construction methods, and industry standards.
Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, design drawings, and technical specifications.
Experience with estimating software (PlanSwift, or similar) and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
Strong analytical and mathematical skills, with the ability to develop accurate estimates based on project requirements.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple estimates simultaneously.
Attention to detail and high accuracy in cost calculations.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit for extended periods and use a computer for estimating tasks.
Ability to visit job sites as necessary to evaluate project requirements.
