The Assembly House is seeking a Woodshop Manager

Who we are: 

The Assembly House is an innovative nonprofit art, design, and construction studio and incubator in Buffalo, NY. With artist and founder Dennis Maher, the organization is transforming a formerly abandoned 1860’s era church  into a “living museum for the construction arts”. The vision for this site is to create a hands-on destination where people can learn trades skills and be in touch with tools and materials. Teams of apprentices and students work with tradespeople, designers, architects, educators and others to build the church into a cultural destination and create designed environments for other sites. Projects are realized while providing educational opportunities in construction arts. 

Our Opportunity: Woodshop Manager  

The Woodshop Manager is a hands-on leader responsible for managing a team of cabinetmaking/carpentry professionals while ensuring the efficient operation of the woodshop. This role combines technical expertise in cabinetmaking/carpentry with strong supervisory skills to guide, support, and develop team members, drive operational excellence, and maintain the highest standards of quality craftsmanship and safety. The position will work closely with the Director and design/construction/teaching team to plan, fabricate, and install projects for commissioned work, as well as at The Assembly House site. 


Key Responsibilities

• Develop and manage plans and specifications for a wide range of carpentry/cabinetmaking projects, prepare and manage project budgets, and set and manage project schedules and workflow


• Lead, mentor, and supervise woodshop personnel, providing coaching and support/foster performance and productivity.

• Oversee the quality and timeliness of project construction through all  stages.

• Train team members on new work methods, safety protocols, construction codes, policies; keep the team updated on industry trends, regulatory requirements, and best practices.

• Collaborate with other contractors and stakeholders when required


Required Qualifications

• 5-10 years of experience in wood frame construction, restoration carpentry and/or cabinetmaking, including at least two years in a supervisory role


• Minimum 5 years of experience in construction management

• In-depth knowledge of carpentry tools, equipment, and materials, including cabinetmaking and advanced woodworking techniques.

• Ability to organize large projects and manage a project from start to finish

• Strives for excellence in construction, superior knowledge of craft, and attention to detail.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with employees, stakeholders, and management

• Knowledge of safety regulations, construction codes, industry standards, and best practices.

• Ability to adapt to change, identify areas for improvement, and develop action plans to address challenges.

Salary range is $60,000 annually. Please note that although compensation is based on a 40-hour work week structure, AH150’s work week is typically 35 hours of work per week.
