Project Superintendent

Join our team in the position of Site Superintendent on an exciting project in Downtown Buffalo, NY!


In the position of Site Superintendent, you will be the primary on-site leader who oversees all aspects of daily construction activities at the NFTA’s Church Street Station Project. Reporting to the Project Manager to ensure the project is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. The Superintendent coordinates subcontractors, craft workers, materials, and equipment while maintaining ongoing coordination with the public transit agency to avoid/minimize impacts to passenger rail service, ensure worker and public safety near active tracks, and comply with all regulatory and contractual obligations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise all on-site construction activities, including earthwork, concrete structures, platform extensions, station buildings, roofing, rail-adjacent work, MEP systems, and finishes.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute the project construction schedule in coordination with the project manager; adjust sequencing to accommodate transit operational windows, night/weekend work, and track possession/flagging requirements.
  • Enforce strict safety protocols, including OSHA standards, transit-specific safety rules (e.g., roadway worker protection, foul time procedures), and site-specific safety plans; conduct daily safety meetings, job hazard analyses, and inspections.
  • Coordinate closely with the transit authority/owner's representatives, flagging personnel, rail operations control centers, and third-party stakeholders to schedule work zones, obtain track access/possessions, and manage service disruptions.
  • Manage subcontractors and direct craft labor: assign tasks, monitor performance, resolve conflicts, and ensure work complies with plans, specifications, and public project standards.
  • Oversee material procurement, delivery, and storage on a constrained urban/site with limited laydown areas; verify compliance with public procurement rules (e.g., Buy America provisions).
  • Perform quality control inspections and ensure workmanship meets design documents, transit agency standards, and ADA accessibility requirements.
  • Maintain detailed daily logs, progress reports, photo documentation, and records for public agency reporting, payment applications, and potential claims/disputes.
  • Identify and resolve field issues proactively; coordinate with engineers, architects, and inspectors to address RFIs, changes, and field conditions.
  • Manage site logistics, temporary facilities, traffic/pedestrian control around the station, environmental controls (e.g., stormwater, dust/noise near passengers), and site security.
  • Foster positive relationships with the public, transit riders, local communities, and neighboring businesses; minimize complaints related to construction impacts.
  • Participate in progress meetings, lookahead planning, and coordination with design/construction management teams.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • 8–15+ years of progressive experience in construction, with at least 5 years as a superintendent on large-scale projects.
  • Proven experience on public infrastructure/transit/rail projects (e.g., train stations, platforms, rail yards, light rail, heavy rail, or similar public works) strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of rail/transit construction practices, including work zone protection, flagging, track safety rules, and coordination with active passenger rail operations.
  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or related field preferred (equivalent experience considered).
  • Strong understanding of building codes, OSHA regulations, FTA guidelines, ADA requirements, and public works contracting.
  • Proficiency with construction management software (e.g., Procore, Primavera P6, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project).
  • OSHA 30-hour certification required; additional rail/transit safety training (e.g., Roadway Worker Protection) a plus.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills; ability to work under pressure in a high-visibility public environment.
  • Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays as required by transit shutdown windows.
